Feeding Program for the Less Fortunate Children

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

A maiden project of the NOVA CENTRAL CHAPTER and the first of its kind since its founding was the Feeding Program for the less fortunate kids in the depressed area of Novaliches last November 14, 2010 from 3pm-7pm. About 60 children from grass root level tagged as “poorest of the poor” families filled the venue, excluding the adults that helped us out to manage such crowd. Spaghetti. Barbecue and other food were served.

The project, though tiresome, was very rewarding. The presence of the UAP-NOVA CENTRAL CHAPTER in the area was obviously felt by the communities around. And because of its success, the chapter is planning to repeat this activity in the near future.

The activity was attended by the chapter members headed by Architect Jose B. Hipolito, the project proponent.

Nova Central Chapter General Membership Meeting & Product Demonstration

As part of the Chapter’ s yearly activities, a General Membership Meeting was conducted on October 2, 2010, 6pm, at Luk Foo Restaurant, Commonwealth Avenue. It was successfully attended by the member Architects, guests, sponsors, and suppliers as well. Several important matters were discussed and tackled for the welfare of the chapter, and was further enhanced by various product presentations of the newest materials latest trends in construction.

Some of the issues and concerns that were brought out among others were in connection to the chapter’s enlargement of tent to the left and to the right, meaning not only about the quantity of members, but likewise, its quality. Other items discussed were the chapter’s involvement and exposure to civic and community affairs. There was a suggestion of indulging in projects that would be beneficial to the surrounding communities, thus, giving positive impact to society.

Some of the members present were Architects Jose Hipolito (Charter President), Donato Magcale (A-4 District Director), Raul Almendral (Chapter President), Ernie Bognalbal (Chapter Treasurer).

Design Against The Elements (DaTE) Entries Exhibit

DAtE is a global architectural design competition seeking to mobilize solutions towards climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction for vulnerable countries like the Philippines. As a knowledge sharing platform, the project aims to draw together the most innovative minds the world has to offer in the fields of architecture, design, and urban planning to develop sustainable and disaster-resistant housing for communities in tropical urban settings.

The winning design will be built as a prototype disaster-resistant and livable eco-village in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. This will be the first green and disaster-resistant low-income urban community in the country and the world which, we anticipate, will provide a model that can be studied and replicated in similar areas in the developing world.

The finished project will house a marginalized community living in an environmental danger zone, giving them a sense of security, ownership, and awareness of sustainability that can be practiced at all levels in their everyday lives.

Design criteria requirements include the following: Disaster Resiliency, Innovative Construction Technology, Socio-economic Sustainability, Sustainability of the Built Environment, Sustainability of the Community, Cost Effectiveness, and Adaptability to Other Sites.

Thirty-One countries (31) and hundreds of designs are now open for viewing at the Quezon City Hall, 14th floor from 8am to 5pm from the 13-17th of December 2010 to all interested students and alumni with thousands of new ideas that will surely leave a lasting impression.

More information on the competition’s details, including a 360° view of the competition lot that was used as the competition site, can be found at the website

Monday, December 13, 2010

With the growing concern on the health issues of school children which may turn up into malnutrition and other related illness such as dengue, etc., the Iriga-Rinconada Chapter Architects came up with a project on Supplemental Feeding Program last October 8, 2010, which turned out very successful. The chosen school was San Vicente Elementary school, Nabua, Camarines Sur composed of almost 600 school children from grade 1 to grade 6. The parents and teachers are very thankful for the kind of activity that the architects have come up, since they told us that it is the very first time that an organization had done this kind of activity. The barangay council of San Vicente is also very thankful for the activity.

Closer to Nature: The UAP Diliman Chapter and “The Architects For Adventure”

Friday, December 3, 2010

With so much talk of “Green Architecture”, “Green Building”, “Sustainability”, and the like, it’s time to take a closer look at what the said advocacies are for, or simply what we are trying to save. Last November 28, 2010, Members of the Diliman Chapter, together with “The Architects For Adventure” (a group of UAP Architects who indulge in and encourage physical activities and nature trips), travelled to Anilao, Batangas to enjoy nature’s aquatic wonders and evaluate the present condition of the famous dive spot. It was a leisure trip, but the group was further educated on how to enjoy natural attractions without destroying it. It gave them a much clearer view of how Architecture affects the rural landscape (and seascape, as well).

Going back to the basics will surely lead to the advancement of all “Green” Advocacies.

The Diliman Chapter “Relaxes” with the rest of the A4 Chapters at the UAP District A4 “Wellness Conference”

It was time for the Annual District Conference of the UAP District A4, and District Director Arch. Don Magcale cooked up something different. It had the same ingredients: Camaraderie, Fellowship, & Unity. But this one was less hectic, very casual, and definitely relaxed. Dubbed as “The UAP District A4 Wellness Conference”, it provided the District’s members with lots of pampering and some well-deserved TLC: from massages to steam baths; from jet tub sessions to a rich buffet. Held at the Getaway Spa in Sgt. Esguerra, Quezon City on November 27, 2010, it served as a “reunion” of the Five Chapters’ Members. The Diliman Chapter filled the slots allotted to it, and mingled with rest of the participants.

The day was laid back and light… and everyone was definitely “de-stressed”.

Diliman Chapter Officer Documents & Participates in My Shelter Foundation’s Building Project

The UAP Diliman Chapter has always been on its toes when it comes to learning about Building Innovations, especially those that have something to do with “Green Building” & “Green Architecture”. Last November 26, 2010, Arch. Nina Santamaria, UAP Diliman’s Auditor, represented the Chapter at My Shelter Foundation’s School Building Project held at San Jose Malamig, San Pablo, Laguna, sponsored by PEPSI, and an Activity of the Phototecture Group. Arch. Santamaria made a Photo-documentation of the Project, which involved the construction of a structure with walls composed of piled-up used “PEPSI Litro” Plastic Bottles filled with a mixture of cement, water, sand, sugarcane fibers (in this case, but can be substituted): An Innovative way of recycling plastic.

This Dilimaner, who enthusiastically participated in this “experiment”, shared with her colleagues and co-members what she learned and observed. Hopefully, this unorthodox construction method would prove to be effective and successful. The Dilimaners shall definitely wait for results, and shall patiently monitor this Project’s progress.

UAP San Juan-Mandaluyong Chapter Purchased LCD Projector

Pursuant to the Agenda of Chapter Board Meeting held on October 13, 2010, the board agreed on purchasing LCD Projector. They had chosen EIKI LC-XBL25 model and was delivered last November 19, 2010. This is one of the flagship projects of the current leadership of providing equipment that will ease the chapter of renting projector used in its every event especially the general membership meetings. This partially fulfils the chapter theme for the fiscal year: “Services Justified for the Membership”. This will give more effective ways of conveying technical information through visual presentation. According to the technical assistant from EIKI, the lamp of this projector may reach up to four years or more depending on its usage.

Pending chapter board resolution, this projector must be under the custody of the Chapter President or his assigned care-taker officer and must be turnover to the next Chapter President in time of change of administration. This equipment shall be available for rent in a considerable rental amount exclusively to UAP-SJMC members only, it shall be a great help for them wanting to present their projects by visual presentation to their clients. The UAP-SJMC Board wished to thank all sponsors who are supporting the chapter, without them this project would not be materialized.
