The First Badminton Night of the UAP Diliman Chapter : A Collaboration with the “Architects for Adventure”

Monday, January 17, 2011

The UAP Diliman Chapter is truly composed of well-rounded individuals : a group that not only concentrates on academics and the professional concerns, but also on fitness and health. The Chapter has been consistently present at and supportive of “wellness” activities like the UAP’s Fitness Nights, which featured Hip Hop Abs, Yoga, Social Dancing, and Kickboxing.

Upon the invitation of the “Architects for Adventure”, the Dilimaners organized its Badminton Night, held at Power Smash in Makati, last January 10, 2011. It gave the Chapter’s members the chance to show off their sports skills. Making new friends in the process. It was tiring, yet stress-free… a gratifying experience. With that said, the UAP Badminton Night will surely be a regular event.

The UAP Diliman Chapter Provides an A/C Unit for a Special Education Classroom at Enlisted Men's Signal Village Elementary School, DepEd NCR Div. of Taguig & Pateros, District II

Academic Excellence has been one of the UAP Diliman Chapter’s advocacies, believing that education should be prioritized by the government. But the government cannot do it alone; that is, each one of us should contribute to the collective goal of uplifting the standards of our Public Schools and Universities. Special needs should also be addressed.

Last January 6, 2011, the UAP Diliman Chapter granted the request of Enlisted Men's Signal Village Elementary School, DepEd NCR Div. of Taguig & Pateros, District II. The Chapter provided an Air Conditioning Unit, which the school’s Special Education classroom badly needed, turning it into an environment conducive to learning, especially for students with special needs.

The Dilimaners, represented by Markel Luna (Chapter President), Minnie Rosel (General Welfare Chair), and Albert Rosel (Chapter CPD-CPE Director) were just too happy to turn over the unit, knowing that the little gesture would greatly and positively affect the school.

The UAP Diliman Chapter Leads the Launch of UAP’s “Fitness Nights: Kickboxing Series”

After the success of the previous “Fitness Nights” sessions, the UAP General Welfare once again treats UAP architects to something new. Kickboxing was a perfect choice, combining exercise with self-defense techniques.

Last January 5, 2011, the UAP Headquarters was transformed into a Boxing gym, complete with an instructor. It’s something to look forward to every Wednesday night, for the whole month of January, 2011.

Feeding Program for the Less Fortunate Children

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

A maiden project of the NOVA CENTRAL CHAPTER and the first of its kind since its founding was the Feeding Program for the less fortunate kids in the depressed area of Novaliches last November 14, 2010 from 3pm-7pm. About 60 children from grass root level tagged as “poorest of the poor” families filled the venue, excluding the adults that helped us out to manage such crowd. Spaghetti. Barbecue and other food were served.

The project, though tiresome, was very rewarding. The presence of the UAP-NOVA CENTRAL CHAPTER in the area was obviously felt by the communities around. And because of its success, the chapter is planning to repeat this activity in the near future.

The activity was attended by the chapter members headed by Architect Jose B. Hipolito, the project proponent.

As part of the Chapter’ s yearly activities, a General Membership Meeting was conducted on October 2, 2010, 6pm, at Luk Foo Restaurant, Commonwealth Avenue. It was successfully attended by the member Architects, guests, sponsors, and suppliers as well. Several important matters were discussed and tackled for the welfare of the chapter, and was further enhanced by various product presentations of the newest materials latest trends in construction.

Some of the issues and concerns that were brought out among others were in connection to the chapter’s enlargement of tent to the left and to the right, meaning not only about the quantity of members, but likewise, its quality. Other items discussed were the chapter’s involvement and exposure to civic and community affairs. There was a suggestion of indulging in projects that would be beneficial to the surrounding communities, thus, giving positive impact to society.

Some of the members present were Architects Jose Hipolito (Charter President), Donato Magcale (A-4 District Director), Raul Almendral (Chapter President), Ernie Bognalbal (Chapter Treasurer).

Closer to Nature: The UAP Diliman Chapter and “The Architects For Adventure”

Friday, December 3, 2010

With so much talk of “Green Architecture”, “Green Building”, “Sustainability”, and the like, it’s time to take a closer look at what the said advocacies are for, or simply what we are trying to save. Last November 28, 2010, Members of the Diliman Chapter, together with “The Architects For Adventure” (a group of UAP Architects who indulge in and encourage physical activities and nature trips), travelled to Anilao, Batangas to enjoy nature’s aquatic wonders and evaluate the present condition of the famous dive spot. It was a leisure trip, but the group was further educated on how to enjoy natural attractions without destroying it. It gave them a much clearer view of how Architecture affects the rural landscape (and seascape, as well).

Going back to the basics will surely lead to the advancement of all “Green” Advocacies.

The Diliman Chapter “Relaxes” with the rest of the A4 Chapters at the UAP District A4 “Wellness Conference”

It was time for the Annual District Conference of the UAP District A4, and District Director Arch. Don Magcale cooked up something different. It had the same ingredients: Camaraderie, Fellowship, & Unity. But this one was less hectic, very casual, and definitely relaxed. Dubbed as “The UAP District A4 Wellness Conference”, it provided the District’s members with lots of pampering and some well-deserved TLC: from massages to steam baths; from jet tub sessions to a rich buffet. Held at the Getaway Spa in Sgt. Esguerra, Quezon City on November 27, 2010, it served as a “reunion” of the Five Chapters’ Members. The Diliman Chapter filled the slots allotted to it, and mingled with rest of the participants.

The day was laid back and light… and everyone was definitely “de-stressed”.

Diliman Chapter Officer Documents & Participates in My Shelter Foundation’s Building Project

The UAP Diliman Chapter has always been on its toes when it comes to learning about Building Innovations, especially those that have something to do with “Green Building” & “Green Architecture”. Last November 26, 2010, Arch. Nina Santamaria, UAP Diliman’s Auditor, represented the Chapter at My Shelter Foundation’s School Building Project held at San Jose Malamig, San Pablo, Laguna, sponsored by PEPSI, and an Activity of the Phototecture Group. Arch. Santamaria made a Photo-documentation of the Project, which involved the construction of a structure with walls composed of piled-up used “PEPSI Litro” Plastic Bottles filled with a mixture of cement, water, sand, sugarcane fibers (in this case, but can be substituted): An Innovative way of recycling plastic.

This Dilimaner, who enthusiastically participated in this “experiment”, shared with her colleagues and co-members what she learned and observed. Hopefully, this unorthodox construction method would prove to be effective and successful. The Dilimaners shall definitely wait for results, and shall patiently monitor this Project’s progress.

Thursday, December 2, 2010

Last November 14, 2010, Architects from different Chapters, as well as a various mix of guests, converged at UAP Headquarters’ Teatro Arkitekto, where the Live Coverage of the Pacquiao-Margarito Fight was screened. Joining in this exciting event was the Diliman Chapter, which participated not only to be one with the audience in cheering on Pacquiao, but also to express its support for this Project of the UAP National Office.

An activity which aimed to generate funds for the completion of UAP’s Architects’ Dormitory at the 4th floor of the UAP Building, it was successful in inculcating camaraderie and friendship among its members, as well. Snacks were served, and the audience was treated to a Raffle, through the help of UAP’s ultra-supportive Sponsors.

The event had favorable results, and the whole UAP, as well as the whole country, celebrated Pacquiao’s victory! 

Fun, Fellowship, & Function : The UAP Diliman Chapter’s GMM No. 5

More Activities have been piling up not only for the Diliman Chapter, but the whole UAP, as well. But the Dilimaners, proactive as they always are, showed enthusiasm and excitement over the upcoming Events. Last November 11, 2010, at Café Breton, UP-Ayala Technohub in Quezon City, the UAP Diliman Chapter’s General Membership Meeting No. 5 took place, with over 30 in attendance.

It was an evening of planning, announcements, the usual casual discussions, and of course, fellowship & fun. The Chapter welcomed the A-4 District Council, which was also there for its Council Meeting No. 6 hosted by Diliman. It gave the members the opportunity to interact with the District Officers and Council Members.

This just goes to show that the Diliman Chapter is spreading its wings, offering its service to and expressing its support for the National Organization.

The UAP Diliman Chapter: Driving Force Behind UAP’s General Welfare Committee

Thursday, November 11, 2010

On November 5, 2010, at the UAP Headquarters in Quezon City, The UAP General Welfare Committee, in its first Meeting, was formed. The Diliman Chapter proudly and willingly lent its hand in solidifying this Group, in which six of its members (Minnie Rosel, Albert Rosel, Markel Luna, Becca Rellosa, Mike Yago, & Nap Ibañez) and Elwin Buenaventura of the Makati Chapter completed the seven-man team.

Having the function of creating guidelines and recommendations for UAP Members’ betterment and welfare, the Committee immediately initialized plans of coming up with a handbook that would explain and expound on the benefits of being a Member of the United Architects of the Philippines.

To “take care” of the General Membership is a gargantuan task, but this group will take on the challenge to make the “UAP Experience” a pleasant one.
